About Indonesia House Amsterdam
A five story building at Brachthuijzerstraat 4 in Amsterdam now serves as Indonesia's main platform for economic and cultural promotion across the Netherlands and wider Europe. Indonesia House Amsterdam, often shortened to IHA, occupies a property with a long institutional history of its own. It originally housed the Indonesian Consulate General from 1967 until that office closed in 1976, after which the building stood largely unused for nearly five decades. Renovation work began in 2020, was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and finished at the end of 2022, with the center beginning operations in early 2023. Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi formally inaugurated the reopened building on 17 September 2024 in a ceremony attended by more than 70 guests.
The building spans roughly 1,400 square meters of floor space and includes an auditorium able to host 80 to 100 participants, alongside meeting rooms used for sessions between Indonesian institutions, foreign partners, and members of the Indonesian diaspora community in the Netherlands. Since reopening, IHA has hosted a range of programs: business, trade, tourism, and investment forums; a dialogue between Indonesian and Dutch startups; an exhibition of Ulos Batak textiles; and a fashion show centered on sustainable batik production. Culinary events, fashion presentations, film screenings, and local art performances have also featured on its calendar, with Indonesia Spice Week Amsterdam and a planned Indonesia Medical Wellness Tourism Expo among its more recent and upcoming events.
As the largest and most complete Indonesian cultural promotion venue of its kind in Europe, IHA functions as a counterpart in Amsterdam to Erasmus Huis, the Dutch cultural center operating in Jakarta. Visitors and event organizers can reach the center through the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague, which oversees its programming, by phone at +31 70 310 8100 or by email at embassy@indonesia.nl. The center also maintains an Instagram account under the handle indonesiahouseamsterdam for updates on upcoming exhibitions and public programs.
