About Garoeda
Garoeda has operated from the same corner of Kneuterdijk and Heulstraat in the center of The Hague since 1949, making it one of the longest-running Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands. The building overlooks the Voorhout, a short walk from the Binnenhof and the Mauritshuis, and the restaurant has been a fixture for local gatherings and family celebrations for more than seven decades. Its name comes from the Garuda, the mythical golden eagle of Indonesian legend, and the dining room carries Balinese woodcarvings that nod to that heritage while sitting inside a space the restaurant describes as having been refreshed into a more contemporary, trendy interior that differs from the original decor.
The kitchen serves Indonesian dishes with what the restaurant calls a creative and modern presentation, built around three broad categories. Street food style dishes such as bakwan jagung, a savory corn fritter, and gado gado, a vegetable salad served with peanut sauce, appear as starters and light plates. Satay is offered in several preparations. For groups, the rijsttafel, or Indonesian rice table, remains the centerpiece of the menu, bringing together a sequence of smaller dishes meant for sharing, a format with deep roots in Dutch Indonesian dining culture dating back to the colonial period. A la carte options round out the menu for smaller parties or quicker visits.
Garoeda operates for dinner every day of the week starting at 17:00, with lunch service added Friday through Sunday beginning at 12:00. The restaurant takes reservations through its own website and by phone, and it offers group menus suited to the kind of larger gatherings its central, historic location has long attracted. Its address, Kneuterdijk 18A, places it within easy walking distance of the Hague's main museums and government buildings, making it accessible for both residents of the city and visitors passing through on day trips from elsewhere in the Netherlands. The restaurant's own website lists its contact details and current menu for visitors planning ahead.
