Chewgo opened in 2018 on Hyde Road in Denton, a residential pocket of Tameside on the eastern edge of Greater Manchester, bringing one of the few dedicated Indonesian menus in the north of England to a street better known for takeaways and a hair salon than destination dining. The restaurant was founded by a group of friends who wanted Indonesian food available outside London, where most of the UK's Indonesian restaurants have historically clustered.

The kitchen sources fresh, locally bought ingredients to build its version of Indonesian staples: nasi goreng, the fried rice dish built around sweet soy sauce and fried shallots; satay, skewered grilled meat served with peanut sauce; gado gado, a mixed vegetable salad dressed in peanut sauce; and beef rendang, meat slow cooked in coconut milk and a spice paste until the sauce reduces to a thick, dark coating. All of Chewgo's meat dishes are halal certified, and the kitchen also prepares vegetarian versions of several standards for diners who want the flavor profile without meat. Beyond the food menu, Chewgo runs a small bar program with beer, wine and cocktails, positioning itself partway between a neighborhood restaurant and a bar.

Dishes are priced between 8 and 15 pounds, with set menus available for groups wanting a broader sampling of the kitchen's range. Chewgo does not require reservations but recommends calling ahead during peak hours, since the dining room is small enough to fill quickly on weekend evenings; delivery and takeout are both available, with delivery limited to a radius the restaurant can confirm by phone. The restaurant is open daily from 4:30pm, closing at 12:30am most nights and staying open until 1:30am on Friday and Saturday.

Transport links are modest: Denton bus station sits about a tenth of a mile away, with Reddish North and Gorton train stations a longer walk beyond that, so most visitors arrive by car or bus rather than rail. For Indonesians living in or visiting Manchester, Chewgo fills a gap that otherwise sends people searching as far as London for a proper rendang or plate of gado gado.
