Little Sister Indonesian Food Bar traces its origin to Quince Bistro, a Toronto restaurant where chef Michael van de Winkel and co-owner Jennifer Gittens had been hosting occasional rijsttafel nights, the Dutch-Indonesian colonial-era tradition of serving many small dishes together, that consistently sold out within hours of being announced. Van de Winkel, who grew up in Amsterdam and first learned to cook Indonesian food while serving as a chef in the Dutch Navy, and Gittens, who had worked with him as private chefs aboard a yacht that took them through Dubai, India, and Singapore, opened Little Sister in June 2014 to give that demand a permanent home, converting a former linen shop on Yonge Street into a 1,200-square-foot, 48-seat dining room finished with printed wallpaper, rustic wood furniture, and bright orange accents.

The menu leans toward small, shareable plates meant to be eaten with the hands: croquettes, skewers, and rendang-spiced tacos sit alongside more traditional dishes such as satay, nasi goreng, babi panggang, a roasted pork belly dish served with pickled bean sprouts and chili sauce, and semur jawa, a spiced braised beef dish served with crispy potato. A cocktail program runs alongside the food menu, drawing on the restaurant's origins as both a food bar and a bar in the conventional sense, though the kitchen remains the more heavily reviewed half of the business according to most published coverage.
