About Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Osaka

Indonesia's diplomatic presence in western Japan predates its current Osaka address by more than six decades. A consulate first opened in the port city of Kobe in 1954, and on 10 April 1973 that post was elevated to a Consulate General. Following the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995, which struck the Kobe area and killed thousands of people, the mission was relocated to Osaka on 1 May 1995. Before settling into its current office, the consulate operated out of the Kato Building and later the Kiandai Building in Kobe, and then out of the Daiwa Bank Building after the move to Osaka. It has occupied its present office in the Nakanoshima Intes Building, on the 22nd floor at 6-2-40 Nakanoshima, Kita ku, Osaka, since 7 April 2016.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Osaka, commonly known as KJRI Osaka, holds jurisdiction over the Kansai, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions of Japan, an area that includes major cities such as Kyoto, Kobe, Hiroshima, and Okayama alongside Osaka itself. This wide catchment reflects the spread of the Indonesian community across western Japan, made up of students at regional universities, technical intern trainees, factory and caregiving workers, and long-term residents married to Japanese nationals, a population considerably more dispersed than the more concentrated Indonesian communities found around Tokyo.

As with Indonesia's other overseas missions, the consulate provides core consular functions: passport and travel document services, visa processing for visitors to Indonesia, notarial services, and assistance for Indonesian citizens who need help with legal, employment, or welfare matters while in Japan. Consular services are provided Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and visitors are generally advised to confirm appointment requirements before arriving, since walk-in capacity can be limited.
